Action Alert: House to Vote on HUD Appropriations Today
Thanks to Matt Schwartz at the California Housing Partnership Corporation for taking the lead on advocating for an improved HUD budget. Please take action today. Contact your representative to support this bill. See attached documents for more details and list of important call targets.
The House will vote as early as tomorrow at 6:30 pm EDT (and the Senate soon thereafter) to send a much-improved HUD budget to the President. Unfortunately, the President has said he will veto this budget when it reaches him. While the vote to approve will be bipartisan, the margin of approval does not at present look like it will be enough to over-ride the President’s veto. If the veto stands, then Congress will almost certainly be forced to cut HUD spending by $3.1 billion to the President’s requested level to get a budget signed by the end of the calendar year. This would result in $1 billion cut to CDBG and hundreds of millions of further cuts to Public Housing, Section 8 Vouchers, Section 202 for the Elderly, Section 811 for the Disabled and federal Section 8 contract renewals.
